Badaling Great Wall Day TourVisit Badaling Ruined Great Wall, which as its name hints, is partially restored and more adventurous for your hiking!
Ruined Badaling Great Wall ( now officially named Ancient Badaling Great Wall ) is 10km southwest of the restored Badaling Great Wall. So, as its name hints, this section of the Great Wall is partially restored and more adventurous, not easy to climb. It is the least touristy section of the Great Wall around Beijing, which is offically opened to the public ( You are not advised to hike the wild section of the Wall in Beijing). Its hikers are mainly foreign travelers instead of domestic travelers who prefer hiking at the restored Badaling Great Wall.
The round trip hiking at the broken Badaling Great Wall normally takes you you approx.3 hours with 5-6 towers on the wall. One of the highlights of the Ruined Badaling Great Wall is that camping on the wall is allowed. if you want to have an unique experience of staying in a tent on the wall overnight, enjoy the sunset and sunrise, the broken Badaling Great Wall is a perfect choice.
The entrance to the Ruined Badaling Great Wall starts with Shixia Pass, but, which is now non-existent. Shixia Pass used to link both the east and west sections of the Ruined Badaling Great Wall. It was blasted to the ground in 1644 when Li Zicheng ( 1606–1645) led his troups having a fierce fighting with Ming defence soldiers. Li Zicheng was a Chinese rebel leader who overthrew the Ming Dynasty and ruled over China briefly as emperor of the short-lived Shun Dynasty. Now Shixia Pass is an open place, a starting point for the wall hike. At the time of writing, the west section is forbidden for hiking. So you enter the non-existent Shixia Pass and turn right (east) and start your hike.
Be well prepared, wear closed shoes and long trousers, sunscreen, insect repellant, sunglass, lots of water.
